Belleville Receives Funding For Flood Damages
McGuinty Government Supports Recovery Efforts

NEWS

The province is providing over $71,000 to help the City of Belleville cover emergency response costs due to flooding in the Foxboro area in spring 2008.

The funding will help to pay costs such as evacuation and shelter, sandbagging, equipment rental, staff overtime and additional security incurred during the flooding.

QUOTES

“The response of the municipality and local volunteers helped prevent further damage to homes and facilities,” said Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Leona Dombrowsky. “The support from the province will help the community’s recovery efforts.”

“I commend the Belleville municipal council for acting quickly to deal with the damages caused by the spring floods,” said Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Jim Watson. “The province worked closely with municipal staff to ensure the safety and well-being of Ontarians.”

QUICK FACTS

  • On April 11, 2008, the City of Belleville declared a state of emergency due to the flooding of the Moira River, which eventually peaked at more than four feet in height in some areas.
  • Over 45,000 sandbags were filled and distributed by volunteers.
  • A small number of residents were evacuated and more than 75 homes were sandbagged.  Many properties in the area had their wells and septic systems flooded.
