| Leona discusses the Throne Speech with Premier Dalton McGuinty |
The McGuinty government is working with Ontarians to strengthen the province’s rural economy, Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington, said today.
Dombrowsky made the comments after Lieutenant Governor James K. Bartleman presented the Speech from the Throne, opening the Second Session of the 38th Parliament of Ontario.
“Our government will continue to make necessary investments in health, to improve access to primary care through more Family Health Teams, and to reduce wait times for key surgical procedures,” said Dombrowsky. “We are also investing in the skills of our people through smaller class sizes and by expanding opportunities in apprenticeships, skilled trades and workplace training.”
The government is also strengthening the province’s rural economy by rebuilding public infrastructure – including roads, schools and hospitals – and by supporting the agri-food industry.
“Our $30 billion agri-food industry is essential to our economy – especially in rural Ontario,” said Dombrowsky. “Our government is working with leaders in this sector to develop a common vision for the future.”
Update: Ontario Government provides additional funding for nutrient management
Today’s Throne Speech sets out three priorities for Ontario’s agri-food industry:
- Innovation: The government will support research and development that helps create new markets and ways of doing business in agri-food
- Marketing Ontario food: The government will work with the industry to develop a new branding and marketing strategy
- Farm income: Ontario is working with the federal government to improve our system of safety nets.
“Our government will strengthen Ontario’s economic advantage by strengthening the education and skills of our people, improving the health of our people, fostering innovation, and investing in infrastructure,” said Dombrowsky.
