Province assists municipalities hit by summer storms
Funds To Cover Cleanup And Other Public Costs

HASTINGS HIGHLANDS — The McGuinty government is providing one-time financial assistance of $35,267 to the municipality of Hastings Highlands to help offset extraordinary expenditures arising from damages to public property from severe storms last August.

“This is good news for Hastings Highlands,” said MPP Leona Dombrowsky, Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington. “The funding announced today will provide necessary assistance for extensive debris cleanup and other activities that result from the severe storm.”

On August 2, 2006, a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the area. High winds toppled trees and downed dozens of hydro lines leaving thousands of residents without power.

The province provides financial assistance to municipalities that experience unusual financial difficulties due to an unforeseen event or special need. These are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The key considerations are the municipality’s financial well-being, its ability to provide essential services to businesses and residents, and the magnitude of the costs incurred.
