McGuinty government invests in improved facilities at Loyalist

BELLEVILLE — Students at Loyalist College will benefit from a better learning environment thanks to an investment of nearly $1 million by the McGuinty government to upgrade buildings and facilities, Leona Dombrowsky, MPP announced today.

“Loyalist College has an outstanding record of helping its students to embark on a prosperous career,” said Dombrowsky. “These investments will improve the quality of education at Loyalist, and will generate economic activity and create jobs across the Quinte region.”

Dombrowsky announced that Loyalist College will receive $664,500 this year to be dedicated to energy efficiency projects. These projects will eventually pay for themselves through reduced energy costs. In addition, Loyalist will receive $322,520 in facilities renewal funding to upgrade essential infrastructure.

“We are pleased that the government has provided this support,” said Loyalist President Maureen Piercy. “This will allow us to make essential upgrades to college facilities and to implement some important energy efficiency initiatives.”

Today’s announcement is part of a $30 million investment to support the construction of new facilities to support enrolment growth and improve energy efficiency at colleges. In addition, the McGuinty government is providing $40 million in 2006-07 through the Facilities Renewal Program to help Ontario colleges and universities refurbish classrooms and labs, improve accessibility and upgrade heating and ventilation systems.

“By enhancing the quality of the learning environment for students at Loyalist, we help them reach higher and strengthen Ontario’s economic advantage,” said Dombrowsky.

Today’s announcement is just one of many initiatives by the McGuinty government to build opportunity for students at Loyalist College. Other measures include:
  • New apprenticeship programs in automotive service, nursing and early childhood education
  • $364,000 to enhance access to college programs for students from rural communities
  • Two year tuition freeze and enhanced financial assistance for students
