Leona discusses the McGuinty government’s investment with Kellogg’s plant manager Jeff Chow.
McGuinty government invests in economic development in Quinte region

BELLEVILLE — The McGuinty government is supporting Kellogg Canada Inc.’s efforts to create jobs and improve the province’s competitive position in global markets, Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, announced today.

“Today’s investment will help ensure the province’s economic advantage and future prosperity for the people of Ontario,” said Dombrowsky. “Kellogg Canada Inc.’s new facility will help boost the local rural economy and provide great opportunities for people in this area.”

The province is providing $2.4 million to Kellogg Canada Inc. as part of its $5-million investment towards rural economic development. The remaining investments are being provided to other organizations to help support them as they continue to create jobs, prosperity, and improve the quality of life for the people of Ontario.

“Kellogg Canada Inc.’s investment in this new 200,000-square-foot plant is great news for families of Belleville,” said Ernie Parsons, MPP for Prince Edward – Hastings. “Quinte Region’s future ability to compete and succeed in the global marketplace depends on innovative projects such as this.”

The Kellogg Company is the world's leading producer of ready-to-eat cereal products. The company is currently expanding its cereal manufacturing capacity in North America by constructing a new facility in Belleville.

Supporting rural economic development is just on way the McGuinty government is working on the side of businesses and families to strengthen the Quinte region’s economy and build prosperity. Other initiatives include:
  • Investing $2.0 million to support the expansion of Procter & Gamble’s Belleville plant. The facility will create more than 100 new jobs.
  • Providing more than $516,000 to the City of Belleville in gas tax funding for improvements to public transportation.

On September 19, 2006, Premier McGuinty announced at the International Plowing Match in Peterborough, $75 million for investments in Ontario’s rural communities. Of this $75 million, $5 million was allocated to rural economic development initiatives in Ontario.
