McGuinty government invests in new elementary school in Marmora

TWEED — Marmora area students will benefit from a new elementary school, Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox-Addington announced today.

“This is good news for students at Sacred Heart Catholic School and the neighbouring community,” said Dombrowsky. “School boards are working closely with the government and their communities to revitalize our classrooms inside and out. This kind of significant education investment will go a long way to support students in this rural community for many years to come.”

Sacred Heart Catholic School was identified as prohibitive-to-repair by the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board and the Ministry of Education. The McGuinty government is investing $3.2 million to build a new school, to be ready by 2009. There will be no disruption for students or parents while the school is being built.

“We are delighted with today's announcement,” said Wilf Garrah, Chair of the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board. “We commend the government for recognizing the importance of small schools in our rural communities, and for the government's commitment to excellence in education.”

The McGuinty government is supporting a $700 million investment to build new schools or expand existing schools to replace facilities where renewal needs are almost as much as the cost of replacing the school. The funding is part of the governmentís $4 billion Good Places to Learn program to address renewal needs and new construction.

“Students deserve safe and healthy school environments,” said Dombrowsky. “By building better schools for our students, we are helping them to succeed and reach their full potential.”
