PICTON Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Prince Edward-Hastings, today announced that five local community groups will receive a combined total of $134,200 in grants from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Joining Dombrowsky to congratulate the deserving grantees was Hugh O’Neil, Vice Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, as well as Ann Wardrop and Mary Ann Evans, volunteers from the Foundation’s local Grant Review Team. “Through the Trillium Foundation, the Ontario Government is helping to build strong communities and an enhanced quality of life for the people who live in them,” said Dombrowsky. “I am pleased that these grants will help support the important work of these groups in Prince Edward County.” Friday’s announcement recognized a range of grants awarded to organizations that help support the Foundations four granting priorities enhanced success for students and learners, healthier and more physically active Ontarians, enhanced employment and economic potential for workers and their families, and more effective volunteers and more people engaged in their communities. The Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Club, recipient of a one-year, $14,600 grant to purchase equipment to expand their physical fitness programming, hosted the event at their facility. “We are honored to host our fellow not-for-profits and charities today for this important announcement for our community,” said Stephanie Roth, General Manager of the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Club. “Thanks to our new grant, we will be able to expand our programs to even more youth, adults and seniors in Prince Edward County. The addition of the indoor cycling equipment will be a great asset to everyone’s healthy and active lifestyle. We are overjoyed by this opportunity to provide quality programming to our community." The Glenwood Cemetery Company received a one-year, $24,800 grant towards restoring, cataloguing and computerizing historical burial records for the Picton area and improving public access to the information. The Hastings Prince Edward Land Trust (HPELT) received a one-year, $30,800 grant to help raise funds and enlist public support for the creation and protection of the McMahon Bluff Nature Reserve, a 97-hectare nature reserve and a home to endangered species in Prince Edward County. The Prince Edward/Lennox & Addington Community Futures Development Corporation received a one-year, $50,000 grant to fund research, idea exchange and policies to support economic development in rural Prince Edward, Lennox and Addington counties. Funds will also help to host the Eastern Ontario Rural Economic Development Conference in May 2008. The Prince Edward Learning Centre received a one-year, $15,000 grant to help purchase new furniture and equipment, as well as to improve classroom facilities and resources available to adult-literacy learners attending programs at the centre in Picton. The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. For 25 years, the Foundation has supported the growth and vitality of communities across the province.
