Leona announced new investments in affordable housing, dental care for low income families

Dombrowsky announces new measures to reduce poverty

BELLEVILLE — The County of Hastings will receive over $1.17 million for repairs to affordable housing as part of the McGuinty government’s plan to help low-income families succeed, Leona Dombrowsky MPP announced today.

“This new funding will mean better quality affordable housing for low income families across Hastings County,” said Dombrowsky. “This is an important part of our government’s plan to combat poverty and assist the most vulnerable.”

Dombrowsky announced that the government will provide $1,172,979 to the County of Hastings. The County will use the funds to repair 2,494 affordable housing units.

Dombrowsky also announced that the government will invest $135 million over three years in a dental care plan for low income families across Ontario.  Public health units, community health centres, dentists and dental hygienists will provide prevention and treatment services.

Finally, the government will help students from low-income families by expanding school breakfast and snack programs.  The Student Nutrition Program will be doubled with a three-year $32-million investment to expand existing services. These programs currently provide healthy snacks and meals for 400,000 kids across Ontario.

“Ontario is only at its best when all of us are working, building and dreaming together,” said Premier McGuinty. “Supporting each other is not only the right thing to do, it is also the smart thing to do, and part of our plan for a stronger economy.”
