Leona made the announcement during National Victims of Crime Awareness Week

Improving services for victims of crime

PICTON — Agencies that assist victims of crime in Prince Edward County will share more than $188,000 to improve services and programs, Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Prince Edward-Hastings, announced today.

“We are reaching out to provide better services to victims of crime,” said Dombrowsky. “We are helping victims connect with a network of community supports so they can find and maintain the services they need.”

Dombrowsky announced that the Picton branch of Counselling Services of Belleville & District will receive $144,730 to enhance its Supervised Access program. This program helps arrange child custody exchanges and visits when there is a safety concern, and is delivered through partnerships with community-based organizations such as children’s mental health centres, neighbourhood support centres, YMCAs and local children’s aid societies.

In addition, the Partner Assault Response program (PAR), which is operated in Picton by Conflict Resolution Counselling Services will receive $43,510 in funding this year.  The program offers specialized counselling and educational programs to offenders who have assaulted their partners and referred by the courts. The goal of a PAR program is to hold offenders accountable for their behaviour and improve safety for the victim.

“We are very pleased that the Supervised Access Service is receiving this additional funding,” said Nicole Chevalier, Clinical Services Manager at Counsellng Services of Belleville and District. “This will allow us to provide a quality service to enhance the safety of vulnerable children and families in our communities.”

Dombrowsky announced that the two agencies will receive a further $337,300 to enhance programming at their Belleville facilities.
